Search "rock glue" and you get two completely different products wearing the same name. One is a liquid you spray over a bed of loose stone to stop it drifting. The other is a resin system that coats every single piece of aggregate and gets troweled into one solid, walk-on surface. They cost different money, they solve different problems, and picking the wrong one is how people end up doing the same job twice.
This guide sorts out which is which, what each one can actually hold, and how to tell in about a minute which one your project needs.
Nobody searching this term is being imprecise on purpose. They have a real problem: stone that will not stay where it was put. Pea gravel migrating out of a path. Decorative rock washing off a slope every time it rains. A gravel apron that scatters across the driveway every time a car turns onto it. Loose stone by the front steps that ends up in the mower.
So the question becomes "what glue holds rocks together?" — and the search results come back with everything from craft adhesive to landscape sprays to full surfacing systems, all using the words glue, adhesive, and binder more or less interchangeably.
They are not interchangeable. Here is the split that matters.
This is the category most big-box and garden-center products fall into. You buy it as a liquid, usually water-based, and you spray or pour it over stone that is already in place. It runs down between the pieces, dries clear, and tacks the top layer together at the points where stones touch each other.
What it is good at: stopping migration. Wind, rain runoff, a leaf blower, a stray boot — a tacked bed resists all of those far better than loose stone does. Most of these products dry clear enough that the rock still looks like rock, and most stay water-permeable because they only glue contact points rather than filling the gaps.
What it is not: a surface. A tacked gravel bed is still a gravel bed. The bond lives in the top inch or so, it is only as strong as the adhesive film at each contact point, and it is renewable rather than permanent — expect to reapply on a cycle, especially anywhere the sun and freeze-thaw work on it. Read the label on whatever you buy, because coverage, cure time, and reapplication intervals vary a lot between formulas.
A resin-bound system works in the opposite order. You do not put the stone down and then glue it. You mix clean, dry aggregate with resin in a batch so that every grain is individually encapsulated, and then you trowel that coated aggregate out over a prepared base and flatten it. What cures is one continuous layer that happens to be made of stone.
The result behaves like a surface, not like a bed of rocks. It has an edge you can define with trim, a level plane you can walk and roll on, and a thickness you choose. Because the resin coats the stones instead of flooding the gaps, small open voids stay between the grains, so water passes through the surface rather than sheeting off it.

Be honest with yourself about the load. Most disappointment with landscape rock glue comes from asking a housekeeping product to do structural work.
It generally holds up to: rain runoff across a bed, wind, the occasional footstep, a leaf blower on a low setting, and light erosion on a gentle slope.
It generally does not hold up to: daily foot traffic on a path, wheelbarrow or trash-bin wheels, a snow shovel, plow blades, or vehicle tires — especially turning tires, which apply a twisting force no surface tack was designed for. It also will not fix a base problem. If the stone is sinking because there is mud under it, gluing the top layer just gives you a crust over the same soft spot.
There is one more limit worth naming: a tacked bed is still loose material underneath. Break the crust in one spot — a dropped tool, a dog digging, a heavy pot dragged across it — and the stone under it is free again.
Plenty of jobs genuinely call for the spray, and it would be silly to over-build them:
In all of these, the stone is scenery. It needs to stay put and look right. It does not need to carry anything.
The photo above is a real resin-bound installation, and it shows the difference better than any description. The aggregate is still visibly stone — you can pick out individual grains and colors — but it reads as one continuous surface with a defined edge, not as a pile of rock that has been sprayed.

This post ranks for the word glue because that is the word people use, so let us be straight about the product.
Stone Bond is not an adhesive you apply to existing stone. You cannot spray it over the gravel already in your yard and expect a surface. It is a two-part system: you buy the resin and the aggregate, you mix them into batches, and you install the mixture as a new layer. The stone that ends up in your path is stone you placed while it was already coated.
That is not a marketing distinction; it changes what you buy and how you plan the job. If you are hoping to rescue an existing gravel bed without removing anything, a surface tack is your product, not this one. If you are ready to install a real surface, this is the category you want.
One more distinction that trips people up: resin-bound is not the same as resin-bonded. Bonded means stone scattered onto a resin-coated slab, so only the bottom of each stone is stuck down and the surface is sealed. Bound means every grain is coated and the finished layer stays permeable. We break that down in resin bonded gravel.
Permeability is the single most common reason people choose a bound stone surface over concrete or asphalt, and it is worth understanding correctly.
Stone Bond is resin-bound and permeable: the resin coats each grain, the small voids between grains stay open, and water passes down through the layer rather than running off it. That is genuinely useful where you are trying to keep water on your own property instead of sending it to the street.
But the surface is only half the system. Water that gets through the stone has to go somewhere. Put a permeable surface directly over a sealed slab or compacted clay and the water simply arrives at the next layer down and stops. Sprayed-on rock glues are generally permeable too, for the same reason: they bond contact points rather than filling voids. The same caveat applies about what is underneath.

Sprayed-on gravel adhesive is the cheapest option by a wide margin. It is a consumable — you buy it by the jug, you apply it to stone you already own, and you buy it again down the road. Budget it like a maintenance item rather than a project.

The way the material math works is simple enough to do in your head. Stone Bond is mixed in batches, and one batch is one gallon of resin plus three bags of stone. At the base half-inch thickness, a batch covers roughly 35 to 40 square feet depending on which blend you pick. Driveways are figured at three-quarter-inch thickness, so plan about one and a half times the material for the same area. A sprayed-on adhesive is a renewable treatment. It sits on the surface, it takes the full brunt of UV and freeze-thaw, and it is expected to be reapplied. Treat reapplication as part of the plan, not as a failure.
A properly installed resin-bound surface is a different proposition. With a sound, properly prepared base and a correct install — clean dry aggregate, the right mix ratio, adequate thickness for the traffic it will see — it is built to stay put as a permanent surface. Those conditions are not fine print; a bound surface installed over a failing base will fail with it.
When a Stone Bond surface eventually needs refreshing, it gets a fresh coat of Stone Bond resin — the same product it was built with. Do not put a paver sealer or concrete sealer on a resin-bound stone surface; those are formulated for concrete and pavers, not for this system, and they can close up the voids that make the surface drain.

For a driveway, a surface tack is the wrong tool — turning tires apply a twisting load it cannot take. Use a resin-bound system installed at driveway thickness over a sound base. A gravel binder for a driveway needs to bind the full depth of the wearing layer, not just crust the top.
Sprayed-on stone glue is renewable rather than permanent, and should be reapplied periodically. A correctly installed resin-bound surface, on a properly prepared base, is intended as a permanent surface and is refreshed with a fresh coat of the same resin rather than replaced.
Gravel binder is another name for the same two categories. In the surfacing world it usually means the resin component of a bound system — the material you mix with aggregate before installing it. In the garden-center aisle it usually means a spray-on adhesive. Check whether the product is applied to stone already in place or mixed with stone before installation; that tells you which one you have.
For a lightly used decorative path it will help, but on a walkway that gets daily use the crust breaks down and the stone underneath works loose. A bound surface is the durable answer for anything people actually walk on.
