There is no single best concrete sealer. There is only the best sealer for your slab, in your climate, doing your job. A driveway that takes hot tires and road salt needs something different from a basement floor fighting moisture from underneath, and both need something different from a decorative patio you want to look richer. Pick by surface and conditions first, and the product choice gets much easier.

Most people shop this backwards. They compare bottles, get lost in competing marketing claims, and buy whatever sounds strongest. Then the sealer fails early, and the sealer gets the blame when the real problem was a mismatch.
Four questions do most of the work:
Answer those and you have narrowed the field before you have read a single label.
Nearly every product on the shelf falls into one of two camps.
Penetrating sealers soak into the concrete and protect it from within. They change the look very little, they cannot peel (there is no film on top to peel), and they leave the surface texture and traction largely as they found it. They are the usual answer where appearance should stay natural and where moisture and freeze-thaw are the enemy.
Film-forming sealers leave a protective layer on top of the surface. That film is what produces gloss and the darker, richer wet look, and it also takes the abrasion instead of the concrete. The trade-off is that films wear, can show traffic patterns, and eventually need recoating or stripping.
Some products, including Crystal Coat, are built to penetrate while still bringing up a semi-gloss, wet-look finish. That combination is why it turns up on both patios and working slabs.
Driveways get the harshest combination on any residential property: vehicle weight, hot tires, oil drips, UV, and in cold climates, de-icing salt and freeze-thaw cycling. Water getting into the slab and then freezing is what causes most driveway spalling and surface flaking, so moisture resistance matters more here than looks. Prioritize protection and traction. If you want the driveway to look richer as well, plan on a finish that can handle tire scuffing rather than a delicate high gloss.
Here appearance carries real weight, and so does bare feet. Sealing a pool deck helps the surface shrug off splash-out, sunscreen, leaf tannins, and pool chemistry. The thing to watch is traction: any sealer that adds gloss can make a wet surface slicker than it was. If the deck gets wet and gets walked on, either keep the sheen modest or add a slip-resistant additive to your topcoat. Garages face a specific villain: hot tire pickup. Tires heat up on the road, soften a surface film, and lift it when the car cools and the rubber grips. That is why a thin decorative film often fails in a garage while the same product does fine on a patio. A penetrating product that protects against oil, brake fluid, and road salt without relying on a surface film is generally the safer choice for a home garage.
It is worth saying plainly: a sealer is not a garage floor coating. If you want a thick, high-build, showroom floor, that is an epoxy or polyaspartic coating system, not a sealer. Sealers protect the concrete you have. Coatings give you a new wear surface on top of it. Both are valid, and they cost and install very differently.
Basement floors usually fight moisture coming up through the slab from the ground rather than spills landing on top. That changes the priority: you want a product that resists moisture without trapping vapor underneath, because trapped vapor is what turns into a cloudy white haze, blisters, or a film that lets go months later. Breathability matters more here than anywhere else. If your slab has a history of dampness, run a plastic-sheet test first (tape a square of plastic down for 24 hours and see if moisture collects underneath) before you seal anything.
Decorative concrete is the one surface where the sealer is part of the design. The color, the stamped texture, and the sealer sheen were meant to work together, and the finish is doing aesthetic work, not just protective work. This is the classic case for a wet-look finish, because that richness is exactly what makes stamped work read as stone. Resealing on schedule is also what keeps the color from looking chalky and sun-faded.
Masonry and natural stone are more porous than a steel-troweled slab, so they drink more sealer and they show finish differences more dramatically. Test a small hidden patch first. Some stones darken far more than you expect, and on natural stone that shift is permanent until the sealer wears off.

Once the surface is settled, finish is the decision people agonize over most. The photo above shows the honest version of it: same patio, same day, sealed on one side and dry on the other.
A natural finish keeps the surface close to how it looks dry. It hides wear well and it is the safer call on large plain slabs, where a heavy gloss can look plastic. A wet-look finish deepens the color and makes texture and aggregate pop, which is why it suits decorative work, flagstone, and anything with real character in it. It also shows scuffs and traffic more readily, and it needs more attention to application to come out even. The right product still fails if the conditions are wrong. Check these before you buy.
Surface prep sits underneath all four. Clean, dry, and profiled beats an expensive product applied over dirt every time. The step-by-step version lives in our guide to sealing pavers and concrete.
Forget the calendar and read the surface. The simplest test costs nothing: splash a cup of water on the slab.

If the water beads and sits on top the way it does above, the sealer is still doing its job. If it soaks straight in and darkens the concrete within a few seconds, the protection is spent and it is time to reseal. Other tells: color looking flat or chalky, stains that used to wipe off now setting, and on film-formers, visible wear paths where people actually walk or park.
How long you get depends on exposure more than anything else. A shaded, lightly used patio can go years. A south-facing driveway that takes sun, salt, and daily traffic will come due sooner. Traffic and UV set the clock, not the label.

One important exception. If your surface is McKinnon Stone Bond resin-bound stone, do not use Crystal Coat or any other paver or concrete sealer on it. A Stone Bond surface is refreshed with a fresh coat of Stone Bond resin itself. They are different products doing different jobs.
For most driveways, prioritize moisture resistance and traction over gloss, because freeze-thaw damage, salt, and hot tires are what actually destroy driveway slabs. A penetrating sealer that protects without relying on a thick surface film handles vehicle traffic more reliably than a delicate high-gloss coating.
It depends far more on exposure than on the calendar. A sheltered, low-traffic surface can go several years, while a sun-baked driveway with daily traffic and winter salt comes due much sooner. Use the water test: when water stops beading and soaks straight in, it is time to reseal.
Yes, and most homeowners do. The work that decides the outcome is the preparation, not the application. Clean the surface thoroughly, let it dry completely, check the forecast, and apply thin and even rather than heavy. Going on too thick is the most common DIY mistake and the usual cause of a blotchy or cloudy result.
Give new concrete time to cure first. About 28 days is the common rule of thumb. Sealing sooner risks trapping moisture that the slab is still releasing, which can show up as haze or blistering later.
Any sealer that adds gloss can reduce traction when the surface is wet. On pool decks, steps, and other bare-foot areas, keep the sheen modest or add a slip-resistant additive to the final coat. A natural-finish penetrating sealer changes traction the least.
If the existing sealer is a film-former and it is failing, peeling, or unknown, strip it. New sealer over a failing film fails with it. If the old finish is sound and you are recoating with a compatible product, a thorough clean and a test patch may be enough. Test before you commit to the whole slab.
